Are you suffering from "Tomorrow Syndrome"

Are you postponing your happiness?

Do you suffer from “ tomorrow” syndrome?

When I get a better job, I will be happy. When I lose weight, I’ll go on vacation. Or maybe it’s tomorrow I’ll start school, tomorrow I will start that biz I been dreaming of starting. Tomorrow I will put myself first.

Maybe you suffer from the “ifs” I had support I wouldn’t be so sad. If I had a man my life would be complete. You're not alone, I’m sure everyone of us have had a case of either of these syndromes. The good thing is this is an easily curable syndrome. We all have at some point put our happiness on hold until 1,2,3 happens but when that big thing we want happens we will give ourselves permission to be happy. You know what the problem is with that kind of thinking is? That thing that you want to happen may happen, and it may make your life completely better when it happens. But do you really want to put your happiness on hold until then?

Happiness is like any other habit: the more you practice it, the more natural it becomes. There are two big reasons why people postpone happiness.

  1. We don’t believe we deserve happiness

  2. We are confused about what actually makes us happy (BOOM)

The belief that we don’t deserve to be happy is directly linked to some common misunderstandings about what actually makes us happy. I can tell you that; wealth, material goods, or fame does not make you happy. For some reason we think that happiness is only for the rich and thin, but one need to only to look at hollywood to see that wealth and fame do equal bliss.Once you get past you baseline needs, additional money does not make you happier.

So what does make us happy?

Research on related happiness projects consistently reveal three factors that contribute to daily happiness:

  1. Being part of something that offers purpose and fulfillment.

  2. Spending time with family and friends.

  3. Being kind and helping others.

As you look at the list which of those things are available to you right now, today? Chances are, you cold experience all three with the next half hour if you wanted. Key word if you wanted. You can do anything you want if you put your mind to it, I am a very strong believe in that. You can reach out to a distant friend and let them know you are thinking about them and want to send your energy their way. You could go make lunches for the homeless.

Take a look at the list again, tell me how thin, rich or fancy you have to be to complete the three? The answer is you don’t have to be thin or rich to be happy. You don’t have to be married, single or have perfect kids to have the happiness that you have been waiting for. The “if” and “when” are all a mind game.

If you want to be happy today, right now, give yourself permission to enjoy the things that provide real pleasure. Be part of something bigger than yourself, spend time with family and friends, and be kind whenever you have the chance. Happiness is not some wild assumption that winter will never come so I do not need to spend money on a jacket. You do not have to wait, you can plan for the future all you want, but don’t put your happiness on hold until it gets here. Allow yourself to be happy today, you won’t regret it.
